15 Sept. (foodconsumer.org) - Drinking green tea may reduce risk of death from all causes, suggests a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The study found those who drank five cups of green tea per day were 16 percent less likely to die from any cause during the 11-year study than those who drank less than one cup per day.
Japanese researchers found the above stated association between drinking green tea and lower risk of death after following up 40,530 people aged from 40 to 79 for 11 years. None of the subjects had a history of stroke, coronary heart disease or cancer when entering the study.
The researchers also focused on the association between drinking green tea and risk of death from individual diseases for a period of seven years. They found that those who drank five cups a day were 26 percent less likely to die from heart disease than those who drank less than one cup a day. In women, the risk was reduced by 31 percent.
The results ware statistical correlations and should be interpreted with caution. The results did not mean a cause-and-effect relation between drinking green tea and reduced risk of death although the effect of green tea on reduction of death risk canít be ruled out.
Health benefits of drinking green tea have been confirmed in many animal studies. Some epidemiological studies have also linked lower risk of heart disease and cancer to consumption of green tea.
