FSIS Alerts Consumers Not to Eat Recalled Honeybaked Foods Products Due To Risk Of Listeriosis

WASHINGTON, November 29, 2006 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert to remind consumers of the Nov. 24 recall of cooked ham and turkey products from HoneyBaked Foods Inc., of Holland, Ohio that were sold nationwide through internet and telephone catalogue sales as well as at retail establishments and kiosks in Toledo, Ohio, that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and to provide safe food handling information for people at risk for listeriosis. The ham and turkey products were sold before Thanksgiving and any leftovers should be discarded.
While FSIS was confirming that HoneyBaked Foods, Inc., contacted customers who had purchased the products subject to recall through telephone and internet catalog sales, FSIS was informed of seven cases of self-reported illnesses. At this time, these illnesses have not been confirmed by laboratory testing, nor have they been diagnosed by a medical professional. The consumers involved in these reports are located in California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada and Texas.
Groups at risk for listeriosis are pregnant women, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. Those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy are also at risk of infection.
Listeriosis could take a few days or weeks to show symptoms that may appear mild. Individuals are often unaware they have listeriosis due to the extended incubation period and presence of mild symptoms. Early signs of illness include fever, chills, muscle aches, diarrhea and upset stomach. If consumers experience these symptoms they should contact their doctor or local healthcare provider. If illness spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or convulsions. Blood tests can be performed to determine if symptoms are caused by listeriosis and can be treated by a doctor.
Products recalled on Nov. 24 include:
* 12- to 16- pound packages of "SLICED & GLAZED FULLY COOKED WHOLE HAM". Each package bears the establishment number "EST. 15875" inside the USDA mark of inspection. Each label also bears a package code between "6261" and "6310."
* 3-pound approximate weight packages of "SLICED AND GLAZED COOKED BONELESS TURKEY BREAST." Each package bears the establishment number "P-15875" inside the USDA mark of inspection. Each label also bears the product code "30505 02099", as well as a package code between "6248" and "6258."
* 3-pound approximate weight packages of "SLICED AND GLAZED FULLY COOKED SMOKED BONELESS TURKEY BREAST." Each package bears the establishment number "P-15875" inside the USDA mark of inspection. Each label also bears the product code "30504 02099", as well as a package code between "6248" and "6258."
The ham and turkey labels also state, "Dist. by HONEYBAKED FOODS INC., HOLLAND, OH 49528."
The ham and turkey products were produced between Sept. 5 and Nov. 13, and were sold at the company's retail stores and kiosks in the Toledo, Ohio, region, as well as through internet and telephone catalogue sales nationwide.
