Sugar control in diabetics cuts preeclampsia risk

Pregnant women with type 1 diabetes may lower their risk of developing preeclampsia if their blood sugar is well controlled during pregnancy during the second trimester, a new study suggests.
Preeclampsia is a potential serious complication encountered during pregnancy, involving high blood pressure and fluid retention.
The study, published in the December issue of the journal BLOG found that careful control of blood sugar during the second trimester, but not the first and third trimester, may reduce the risk of preeclampsia in women with type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, often develops during childhood and can be more dangerous than type 2 diabetes
The study, conducted by Dr. Rosemary C. Temple and colleagues from Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust, UK, followed up 290 pregnancies in 179 women with type 1 diabetes.
The results suggest that women with type 1 diabetes should monitor their blood sugar carefully during pregnancy, particularly during the second d trimester.
