A new study in the Dec 2008 issue of Diabetes Care showed
that people with diabetes were more likely to suffer blood cancers classified
as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, or NHL than those without.
Dr. Anastassios G. Pittas and colleagues at Tufts
University School of Medicine in Boston confirmed the link after they reviewed
16 previous studies reporting an association between diabetes and NHL.
They found people with diabetes were 19 percent more likely
to develop NHL than those who did not have the condition.
The researchers suggested that the immune changes
associated with diabetes may be in part responsible for the elevated risk of
NHL.
