A new study of bisphenol A, an estrogenic chemical linked to increased breast cancer risk, suggests that it lingers in the body longer than previously thought. Scientists tested the theory that BPA is flushed from the body shortly after exposure by looking at levels of the chemical in fasting individuals. Researchers noted that while some BPA is eliminated rapidly, low levels persist. This is a significant concern, since even very low levels of BPA can affect fetal development and increase the risk of developing breast cancer later in life. BPA has also just recently been show to interfere with chemotherapy. The FDA, meanwhile, is sticking to its own theory that BPA is safe.
