broccoli_153610850.jpgA compound found in broccoli could be enlisted to fight or treat breast cancer, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Sulforaphane was found to be able to target breast cancer stem cells that would otherwise get killed by current chemotherapies. The compound prevented new tumors from growing.

The study was published in the May 1, 2010 issue of Clinical Cancer Research.

For the study, the researchers injected varying concentrations of sulforaphane extracted from broccoli into mice with breast cancer and then counted the number of cancer stem cells in the tumors.

They found mice treated with the broccoli compound had fewer stem cells. Additionally, cancer cells from mice treated with sulforaphane were unable to grow new tumors.

Similar results were observed when sulforaphane was applied to human breast cancer cells.

Though we dont like it but once a blue moon we should make it a point that we are having it in our diet at least every fortnight because the thing which is bitter and which are not liked by us are always advantageous for us and our health.

Since scientists have yet to test sulforaphane's effects in humans, the study's authors do not suggest that people looking to treat or prevent breast cancer add sulforaphane supplements to their health regimen at this time.
