Vitamin C, k3 may be enlisted to cure leukemia

Saturday, July 30, 2011 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study published recently in the Cancer Cell International suggests that vitamin c together with vitamin k3 may help treat leukemia.
The study led by Angelica R Bonilla-Porras of University of Antioquia (UdeA) in Colombia shows vitamin k3 or vitamin C induced apoptosis in leukemia cells.
The researchers further identified the mechanism behind the killing cancer cells by vitamin k3 and vitamin C. They found the vitamins activated NF-kB, p53, c-Jun, protease caspase-3 through an oxidative stress mechanism, leading to nuclei fragmentation.
They also found cell deaths were particularly significant when vitmin k3 and vitamin c were used in a ratio of 10 μM to 10 mM (1 to 1000) or 3 μM to 300 μM (1 to 100).
The study was conducted in Jurkat and K562 cells. Further in vivo studies are needed to confirm whether vitamin k3 and vitamin C can be used to treat or cure leukemia.
One previous study suggests that high dose IV-injections of the vitamin C, also known as ascorbate or ascorbic acid, reduced tumor weight and growth rate by about 50 percent in mouse models of brain, ovarian, and pancreatic cancers.
Studies also found vitamin C may help fight stomach cancer as well.
The keyword here is "high doses". Vitamin C must be used in high doses to have an effect. Many studies that have "successfully" demonstrated that vitamin C is ineffective in treating cancer used very low doses.
To treat cancer, the best way is to IV-inject vitamin C so the blood can maintain a high level of vitamin C to destroy the cancerous cells.
The authors of the current study claimed that this is the first time that vitamin C is demonstrated to successfully kill leukemia cells in cell lines.
