Farrah Fawcett dies from anal cancer: What you need to know

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Farrah Fawcett reportedly died Thursday at age 62 from anal cancer. According to ABC News, the human papilloma virus or HPV, a sexually transmitted infection, can cause anal cancer although that does not mean Fawcett was promiscuous.

The news outlet quoted Dr. Jay Brooks chairman of the department of hematology and oncology at Ochsner Clinic Foundation and Hospital in Baton Rouge, La as saying Fawcett was probably exposed to HPV at some point in her life.

HPV may not be the only risk factor. According to the National Cancer Institute, having multiple sexual partners, having receptive anal intercourse, smoking, and certain anal conditions can also cause anal cancer.

For more information about anal cancer, read the following article cited from the NCI website.

General Information About Anal Cancer

Key Points for This Section

Anal cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the anus.
Being infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV) can affect the risk of developing anal cancer.
Possible signs of anal cancer include bleeding from the anus or rectum or a lump near the anus.
Tests that examine the rectum and anus are used to detect (find) and diagnose anal cancer.
Certain factors affect the prognosis (chance of recovery) and treatment options.

Anal cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the anus.

The anus is the end of the large intestine, below the rectum, through which stool (solid waste) leaves the body. The anus is formed partly from the outer, skin layers of the body and partly from the intestine. Two ring-like muscles, called sphincter muscles, open and close the anal opening to let stool pass out of the body. The anal canal, the part of the anus between the rectum and the anal opening, is about 1½ inches long.

The skin around the outside of the anus is called the perianal area. Tumors in this area are skin tumors, not anal cancer.

Being infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV) can affect the risk of developing anal cancer.

Risk factors include the following:
Being over 50 years old.
Being infected with human papillomavirus (HPV).
Having many sexual partners.
Having receptive anal intercourse (anal sex).
Frequent anal redness, swelling, and soreness.
Having anal fistulas (abnormal openings).
Smoking cigarettes.

Possible signs of anal cancer include bleeding from the anus or rectum or a lump near the anus.

These and other symptoms may be caused by anal cancer. Other conditions may cause the same symptoms. A doctor should be consulted if any of the following problems occur:
Bleeding from the anus or rectum.
Pain or pressure in the area around the anus.
Itching or discharge from the anus.
A lump near the anus.
A change in bowel habits.

Tests that examine the rectum and anus are used to detect (find) and diagnose anal cancer.

The following tests and procedures may be used:
Physical exam and history: An exam of the body to check general signs of health, including checking for signs of disease, such as lumps or anything else that seems unusual. A history of the patient’s health habits and past illnesses and treatments will also be taken.
Digital rectal examination (DRE): An exam of the anus and rectum. The doctor or nurse inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the lower part of the rectum to feel for lumps or anything else that seems unusual.
Anoscopy: An exam of the anus and lower rectum using a short, lighted tube called an anoscope.
Proctoscopy: An exam of the rectum using a short, lighted tube called a proctoscope.
Endo-anal or endorectal ultrasound: A procedure in which an ultrasound transducer (probe) is inserted into the anus or rectum and used to bounce high-energy sound waves (ultrasound) off internal tissues or organs and make echoes. The echoes form a picture of body tissues called a sonogram.
Biopsy: The removal of cells or tissues so they can be viewed under a microscope by a pathologist to check for signs of cancer. If an abnormal area is seen during the anoscopy, a biopsy may be done at that time.

Certain factors affect the prognosis (chance of recovery) and treatment options.

The prognosis (chance of recovery) depends on the following:
The size of the tumor.
Where the tumor is in the anus.
Whether the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.

The treatment options depend on the following:
The stage of the cancer.
Where the tumor is in the anus.
Whether the patient has human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Whether cancer remains after initial treatment or has recurred.

Why must the public once again open it's caustic mouth and have a comment? The poor lady died with much pain and suffering. God bless her.

I was sadden by the loss of Farrah and my prayers are going to daily include Ryan and Redmon. It is sad that the world is focused on Michael Jackson though he is also news worthy, His was sudden, prior to her death was horrible suffering and yet she fought it until the end. She will be my inspriation till the day I die because she was courageous and fearless and kept hope. I know that she was a great woman, mother, significate other, Friend and fighter plus a literal ANGEL now. She helped me make the discision to leave my EX husband who beat me. Yes an actress but she put my life on the screen and yet the story wasn't mine it really was and she showed me that is not what life is. I would probably be dead right now if it wasn't for her role in Burning Bed, instead I am Happily remarried with 6 children and three Grand Children. Thank you Farrah, you will be missed and to her Friends and Family God be with you and give you comfort in this trying empty time in your life.

This article was informative for us as women about HPV. Farrah's illness actually helped me realize early detection is key and hopefully the vaccine out now can cure women from having the same cancer. She was in pain & can finally be free now. God bless her and her family she leaves to mourn her loss.

And in reference to the comment made about MJ. Whenever a death is 'sudden' there is shock amongst people. Whereas if someone is sick for a period of time with a chronic illness its not a shock but a definite hurt & loss. Its just that people are more emotionally prepared with a sickness versus a sudden loss. The difference is when I mention Farrah to my 12yr old niece she has no clue who she is and not familiar with Charlies Angels. When I mention MJ,she immediately is aware of who I'm talking about...because he is known across the world, all ages,races,genders....etc. Farrah and MJ were great celebrities and icons.

I just watched her documentary which I never got to see. What a wonderful courageous human being she was. She put up such a strong fight. This certainly will make prople aware and have themselves checked. My prayers are with Ryan and her son and with her friends and family. Rest in peace Farrah you will no longer have to suffer, maybe you and Michael climbed together to your peace... Dear Lord may they both rest in peace.

Loss of life is more impotant than the next. Farrah's life was just as important to her family as Michael Jackson's life was important to his family. Bost exhibited great triumph in their professional and personal lives and gained loyal fans. Farrah's journey was a courageous one as she still thought to help and lighten others throughout her battle. Although Michael's death was an unexpected shock he still helped others through his donations to various charities and both stars will be greatly missed and remembered forever! May the Lord be with their families and May they rest in peace!

Dear Farrah, it is coming very near my wee Daddie's 1st Anniversary due to cancer. Regretabley I was not with him in his last moments, due to the speed of this evil nasty disease. My heart is torn, but you have helped me more than you will ever know by watching your documentary and listening to your thoughts and feelings, as my Dad was just like you, humble and sweet. So, thank you Angel. God took you for a reason....he needed another Angel to help him in his work. I hope it rains big drops in HEAVEN, for you sweetie....I have always loved the rain, its natural and free. So nite nite sweet Farrah, your free from that demon that took you from those who love you. Out of sight, but never ever outta mind. Deepest regards for your family and friends. God Bless. R.I.P.
