A new study suggests that people with type 2 diabetes are at higher risk of a number of cancers including gallbladder, biliary and pancreatic cancer.

The study found that among people with type 2 diabetes mellitus, incidence of pancreatic cancer was three times higher than that among those without the medical condition.

For gallbladder and extrahepatic biliary cancers, the risk for those who had type 2 diabetes was twofold higher than for those without type 2 diabetes.

M Mazen Jamal, MD, MPH, Division of Gastroenterology, Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Long Beach, California compared 1,172,496 cases of type 2 diabets discharged from the medical facility and controls.

The study was published on Nov 14, 2009 in World Journal of Gastroenterology.

The relationship between diabetes mellitus and the risk of pancreatic cancer has been a matter of study for a long time. Taking into consideration diabetes mellitus irrespective of type, there is a lack of agreement regarding the data; in fact, some epidemiological studies have excluded this possibility whereas others have found a relationship between the presence of diabetes and the development of pancreatic cancer.
