Shampoo and sunscreen update - EWG newsletter
Dear Readers,
Choosing a better shampoo
There's more to choosing a shampoo than whether it makes your hair look smooth. From fragrances to cancer-causing contaminants, it's important to check the label.
Check out the top-rated shampoos.
The danger of hair straighteners
A recent EWG investigation revealed widespread use of cancer-causing formaldehyde in popular hair straighteners and salons across the country.
Check out our Flat-Out Risky report to see what salons across the country use these dangerous products, find out more about the chemicals and their effects, and learn some better options for straightening your hair.
Thank you so much for standing with EWG Action Fund and calling on the Food and Drug Administration to regulate sunscreens.
While we continue waiting for the FDA to stand up to industry, EWG has stepped in to provide you with some great online resources like our 2011 Sunscreen Guide and Skin Deep Cosmetics Database for you to check out. EWG is always updating the database with new products and research. We want to make sure you don't miss the latest info.
Just in time for summer, we released our fifth annual Sunscreen Guide. The 2011 Guide analyzes more than 600 beach and sport sunscreens, and, unfortunately, we can only recommend one in five. Check out how your favorite brands rate -- you may be surprised at how some leading brands such as Coppertone and Banana Boat fared.
This year's report also includes several great resources like our Sun Safety Tips, an updated Hall of Shame and Nine Surprising Truths about Sunscreen.
Choose safe ingredients for young skin
On any given day, you might rub, spray or pour some combination of sunscreen, diaper cream, shampoo, lotion and maybe even insect repellant on your child's skin. EWG surveyed more than 3,300 parents to find out what shampoos, lotions, bath soaps and other personal care products their children use. From the specific products named by these parents, we found that children are exposed to an average of 61 distinct chemical ingredients every day, many of which have never been shown to be safe for children by the government or the cosmetic industry's expert safety panel.
