MMR vaccine may actually cut autism risk

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

A recent survey by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that prevalence of autism in U.S. children increased by 57 percent from 2002 to 2006.  There is no known cause for the increase.

Some early studies found an association between the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination and autism in children. But others proved otherwise.

One new case-control study led by Mro?ek-Budzyn D of Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland and colleagues showed that children who received MMR vaccines were actually at much lower risk of autism.

The researchers included in their study 96 cases of autism in children aged 2 to 15 and 192 healthy children matched to cases by year of birth, sex and general practitioners.

All data on autism diagnosis and vaccination history were obtained from physicians and data on possible autism risk factors were collected from subjects' mothers.

Mro?ek-Budzyn et al. considered mother's age, medication during pregnancy, generation time, perinatal injury and Apgar score in their analysis and found MMR vaccine was not linked to increased risk of autism.

Of children vaccinated before diagnosis, those who were vaccinated with MMR were at 83 percent reduced risk of autism and those vaccinated with single measles vaccine were at 56 percent reduced risk compared to those who were non-vaccinated.

Vaccinated children were at 72 percent reduced risk of autism compared to those who were did not receive measles vaccine.

In those who were vaccinated before onset of first symptoms, odds ratio for MMR versus single vaccine was 0.47/1, meaning that those receiving MMR were at 53 percent reduced risk compared to those receiving single measles vaccine.

The researchers concluded that "the study provides evidence against the association of autism with either MMR or a single measles vaccine."

The study was published on Dec 1, 2009 online in The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal.

Editor's note:  The study is tiny. Now that many other risk factors were included in the analysis, any possible link between MMR vaccine and increased risk of autism can be erased.  This is not to say there is indeed such a link.  It’s just that the research couldn’t actually disprove the link.

Here's whey the "study" is bunk:

It looks at children ages 2-15, but the MMR was not even introduced to Poland until 2003 when it replaced single shots:
http://www.euvac.net/graphics/euvac/vaccination/poland.html

This was around the same period that the health authorities in the US were phasing out the mercury-based preservative, thimerosal. The EMEA, European Medicines Evaluation Agency, followed similar suit, and encouraged the use of thimerosal-free vaccines whenever feasible. It's possible that the "big decrease" in autism in children who received MMR vaccines as opposed to those who received measles vaccines may simply be due to the fact that older kids who didn't get the MMR were more likely to receive thimerosal.

This is further supported by the fact that the difference is only statistically significant in children who received MMR versus measles vaccine, because children who received the measles vaccines would have been more likely to have received other vaccines than their un-measles vaccinated counterparts, namely those which were preserved in thimerosal.

Furthermore, this sample is incredibly small. Results vary by what is literally several subjects. It does not mean anything.

Any post that harps on thimerosal is clearly suspect. Close to 100 different studies, all with a sufficient number of children, have determined that thimerosal is NOT a risk to children. It's not a causative factor in autism in children.

It's really too bad that conspiracy theorists have hijacked autism and thimerosal information.

Yes, it is. You don't even need a real study to disprove it, just a glimpse at a very few numbers will tell you it's bunk.

We dramatically reduced (practically eliminated) thimerosal in childhood vaccines, 8 years ago. Has there been a drop-off in autism cases? No.

Sweden & Denmark completely eliminated thim from their childhood vaccines, back in '93. Any drop in their autism numbers? No.

Jake is spot on, and Delldolly is clueless. Face the facts, Mercury is bad. The Hanna Polling and Bailey Banks court cases prove its no theory. A few people die from the swine flu and there is a world emergency but 1 out of 110 kids is getting autism and the CDC is doing nothing. If 1% of the population is coming down with this, isn't that a major epidemic and not the swine flu?

One in 110 U.S. Children Has Autism BusinessWeek - Dec 18, 2009 The number of 8-year-old children with autism jumped an average of 57 percent between 2002 and 2006. This rise is part of a trend predating the 1980s, when autism was still considered rare. Previously, the national estimate was one in 150 children has autism...Prevalence increased 55 percent among whites, 31 percent among blacks and 90 percent among Hispanics... More males were diagnosed with an ASD than females, approximately one in 70 boys and one in 315 girls. This represents an average increase in boys of 60 percent and, in girls, 48 percent...The findings do not lay to rest the controversy surrounding whether or not thimerosal, which was once a component of children's vaccines, contributed to autism risk because the preservative was still being phased out at that time. http://www.businessweek.com/lifestyle/content/healthday/634265.html

Homeland Bill Rider Aids Drugmakers Riding along on legislation to create a new federal Department of Homeland Security is a White House-backed provision that could head off dozens of potential lawsuits against Eli Lilly and Co. and other pharmaceutical giants. http://www.commondreams.org/headlines02/1115-01.htm

The Man Behind The Vaccine Mystery - CBS Evening News - CBS News It's been a mystery in Washington for weeks. Just before President Bush signed the homeland security bill into law an unknown member of Congress inserted a provision into the legislation that blocks lawsuits against the maker of a controversial vaccine preservative called "thimerosal," used in vaccines that are given to children... House Majority Leader Dick Armey tells CBS News he did it to keep vaccine-makers from going out of business under the weight of mounting lawsuits. "I did it and I'm proud of it," says Armey, R-Texas. "It's a matter of national security," Armey says. "We need their vaccines if the country is attacked with germ weapons." "And I said, 'Who told you to put it in?'" He said, 'No, they asked me to do it at the White House.'"

Critics say the Bush family and the administration have too many ties to Eli Lilly. There's President Bush's father, who sat on the company's board in the 1970's; White House budget director Mitch Daniels, once an Eli Lilly executive; and Eli Lilly CEO Sidney Taurel, who serves on the president's homeland security advisory council. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/12/12/eveningnews/main532886.shtml

Eli Lilly and Thimerosal -- In These Times Eli Lilly faces hundreds of civil lawsuits from parents who blame thimerosal for their autistic children. But the pharmaceutical giant has powerful friends in the White House and in Congress. The elder George Bush sat on Lilly’s board of directors in the 1970s, and White House Budget Director Mitch Daniels was a Lilly executive. Lilly CEO Sidney Taurel was named by President George W. Bush to the Homeland Security Advisory Council. In November 2002, Congress passed a provision, tucked into a spending measure for homeland security, to indemnify Eli Lilly from lawsuits and require families to seek compensation through the federally funded Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. It was repealed in February 2003 after public outcry. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) still hopes to pass a similar bill. Congressional consideration for Eli Lilly makes sense: In the 2002 election cycle, the company gave more than $1.5 million to federal candidates, with three quarters to Republicans, making it the fourth-biggest giver in the pharmaceutical industry, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. In the current election cycle, the company already has given close to $230,000 (67 percent to Republicans) to federal candidates. http://www.inthesetimes.com/article/649/

Nah...you can't find one...because..there are NONE. NONE.

Why? After all...how hard should it be for SCIENTISTS to put thimerosal into a petri dish with living cells and see the effect it has on those living cells.

Just so everyone is aware, the foundation of evidence for the tired old canard that autism rates "increase" after the thimerosal is removed are some very flawed studies from Denmark where the autism registry started taking in a lot more cases at the time of thimerosal removal in 1992 because the Danish government was concerned that it had been causing autism. As a result, there was a huge artificial increase.

When the high case ascertainment standards given to post-1992 cases were then applied to pre-1992 cases, the autism rate decreased after thimerosal removal by an estimated 2/3rds.

Here is an example of a "study". "Experts" [sic] produced a study that implied that children with autism and children not afflicted with autism had nearly the same levels of mercury in their blood, so they then deduced that mercury surely does not cause autism.

Here is the simple deception.

* The vaccine is injected directly into muscle tissue, some of the mercury may be absorbed into the bloodstream.
* Mercury that is absorbed into the bloodstream does not stay in the blood at significant levels indefinitely.
* Mercury is absorbed into the body's organs and tissue.
* The bloodstream is just a partial conduit to distribute some of the mercury (and other toxins) from the needle to the entire body.
* Mercury levels in the bloodstream indicate relatively recent intake of mercury into the bloodstream.
* Mercury levels in the bloodstream are not a viable indicator of mercury already distributed and absorbed into the entire body.
* "The entire body" includes the brain, where mercury is a known neurotoxin that is well documented to inflict numerous cognitive disorders, including autism.

Again for emphasis, the study inferred that there was very little difference of mercury levels in the bloodstreams of children with and without autism. So what? To come to the conclusions that mercury and therefore vaccines do not cause autism, they would have to measure the resultant level of mercury in the brain, not the blood.

Delldolly you said,

"Close to 100 different studies, all with a sufficient number of children, have determined that thimerosal is NOT a risk to children. It's not a causative factor in autism in children."
You have no idea what has happened to our kids. people like you say as this person did "That has been borne out by hundreds of studies reviewed by America’s chief independent advisor on science and health policy, the Institute of Medicine, as well as studies conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and more.

You apparently do not know that all the large populous studies have been debunked by the NIEHS of the NIH
National institute of environmental health sciences, In a congressional report the "CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding has delivered a potentially explosive report to the powerful House Appropriations Committee, in which she admits to a startling string of errors in the design and methods used in the CDC's landmark 2003 study that found no link between mercury in vaccines and autism, ADHD, speech delay or tics.

By this we can glean that at the least, the Dir. is guilty of world class incopatance. Border line stupidity!! At the worse she the Dir. is guilty of a criminal cover up. which then it makes this a full blown conspiracy.

This is the studies the IOM used to conclude that vaccines are not associated with autism. It seems that mountain of evidence they claimed they had, was in fact a mirage.

This is from a letter to a reporter on his article about the parents loss in vaccine court.

Dr. Snyderman from ABC news was quoted and said they took the thimerosal out of vaccines and the rate of autism went up.

It was the Denmark study that she Dr. Snyderman was referring to.

Notice this statement from the chair of the NIEHS panel ordered by congress to look at the evidence of the CDC.
Dr. Irva Hertz-Picciotto,
"As questionable as the US thimerosal study was, "it was an improvement on other studies, including the two in Denmark, both of which had serious weaknesses in their designs," Dr. Irva Hertz-Picciotto, Professor of Public Health at UC Davis Medical School and Chair of the NIEHS panel, told reporter Dan Olmsted at UPI.
(That leaves very little for the CDC to go on in terms of proving that thimerosal and autism are not associated in any way.)

(That leaves very little for the CDC to go on in terms of proving that thimerosal and autism are not associated in any way.)

that's a far cry from what Dr. Snyderman and Dr.Offit and
Dr.Harvey Karp is saying. It doe's appear they are very badly misinformed, and in turn they are putting out misinformation. You know what they are accusing us the parents of.

The Dir.of the CDC was asked for a response to the congressional report
Dr.Gerberdings response was I concur

She then said If you give us more time we will do good quality studies.

She also said any further use of the VSD
(Vaccine Safety Data link)and it's ability to find a link to autism would be misleading.

I guess after all these years we can come to the conclusion, she the Dir. was misleading the public.

And for what reason would she the Dir. of the CDC do this?
Simple, her future employer MERCK wanted it that way.

Why does everyone consider that only thimerosal is a problem in vaccines?

Many of our kids have low immune system, which is contre-indication for vaccniation.
My son had clear measles sympthoms after the MMR+hepatitus B shot. He has a low Mannose Binding Lectin, what should bind to measles (and other enthero, retro, etc viruses - polio, rubella, Hepatitus B, etc). So, if you do not have enough MBL, these viruses are not "disabled" and you just have them continuously.

MMR viruses are alive, so, it's normal kids could have real measles with vaccine shot if they are weak. And we vaccinate in order to PREVENT measles@C° sickness, right?
Thus, it looks like there is a great risk we inject them instead.

And - ANYBODY checked immune system before vaccination? And it should be done due to contre-indications written in the administration instructions from the producers...

I asked several researches why they do not check is the viruses themselves are the acse - everyone just say there is not such a research yet. When ? Why do we discuss thimerosal forgetting about the key component of the vaccine?
Allergies increse - isn't is a good indicator of immune system weaknesses overall?

Denmark was debunked! and in other country's where they removed it they
have not put it back, plain and simple vaccinations are a sham. That appear to
be costing the U.S. their economy for all the chronic disease they cause. Other wise explain why the most vaccinated nation in history, being the sickest. You can easily trace it back to the toxins and heavy metals in vaccines. They destroy the immune system at an early age, thus causing chronic disease. Hence the need for health care insurance. A little hint here on how to get a handel on health care STOP! POISONING CHILDREN! at birth and then wonder why they become sick adults, The new economy of the U.S. is now being based on keeping people sick. What makes you people think that giving 32,500 ppb of MERCURY on one day at one setting is safe when 200 ppb is considered EPA standard for
liquid toxic waste? And I will bet none of you know, that there is the synergy effect of the two salts mixed. The mercury in Thimerosal and the aluminum
in vaccines as a catalyst, when you have Mercury killing one hundred cells, mix aluminum and you will cause the toxin
to become a super toxin and kill x 10.
You will now kill one thousand cells.
On the MSDS sheet of thimerosal it plainly states that Thimerosal targets the organs of the body in particular the Brain and the lining around the Brain.
Aluminum is also listed on the MSDS under reactivity Data in layman's terms for all you PH D's out there this means DONT!!!!!!!!!!!!
get Thimerosal around Aluminum!! Why simple Mercury and Aluminum react violently together when mixed with the production of heat.
My son was NORMAL till 27 mos.vaccines
at the injection site was a knot the size of a mans fist so hot it would burn you to touch it the next day three
mini seizures and my Normal child is GONE!Replaced by a mad hatter, was speaking. Within 6 mos lost all speech
but all the markers of Autism began within two days hand flapping screaming
chewing everything in site steaming.
You sick people in vaccine safety the three stooges could have done a better job than you have. Most of you have never heard that the CDC was warned in 1948 and again in 1982 a AMA grant to study the dangers of thimerosal a blue ribbon team of researchers, at the lead was Dr. Engley.

Their findings was;

" Dr. Engleys AMA blue ribbon panel findings

(This was before the AMA sold their soul and conscience to Big Pharma)

"We found thimerosal is toxic down to a level that is almost unbelievable. Down to 1.10, maybe 100 nanograms...a millionth of a gram and that is about as toxic as you can get," he said."

Also

It is clear from this research supported by a grant from the American Medical Association that
Thimerosal is neither efficacious nor safe, and should be removed as a preservative in prescription biologics and pharmaceutical products, as well as from topical over-the-counter products such as Butt-Balm that have Thimerosal present in their formulations as an active ingredient."

FDA corrupt, CDC corrupt, AAP Totally corrupt!

Just before he died Dr. Engleys last quote and most important

"if they had followed through on our 82 report the vaccines would have been freed of thimerosal and all this autism they tell me would not have occurred"

you cannot get any more clearer than that.

My 12-year-old son has severe and disabling autism. I was a member of the anti-vaccine club until I noticed that no matter what the evidence the anti-vaccine story changed to match it. Now, whether or not vaccines contribute to autism prevalence the debate has been so politicized by the anti-vacine crusaders that the science will be near impossible to translate in good treatment.
Also, although there is so much crappy information out there now that it's difficult to find the real stuff, I would like to remind everyone yet again that NO formulation of the MMR vaccine has ever contained thimerosal.

On the day my children received their MMR vaccine, they received other vaccines that did contain Thimerosal. The argument that the MMR never contained mercury, doesn't hold much weight if you're injecting mercury via other shots on the same day. The simple fact is that many of our children were given live virus vaccines at the same time as Thimerosal.

My children were developing normally - until they received their MMR shots. They both were harmed by this particular vaccine. They both suffered encephalitic reactions, due to the live viruses. Remember, rubella has always been noted as a cause for autism. Why wouldn't injecting this live virus into our small children result in some of them acquiring autism?

While I hate taking responsibility for holding them down to receive the shots that disabled them - denying what happened and the fact that those vaccines were responsible would provide me with no absolution. We must begin to admit that these vaccines are harming more children than they are helping.

Our daughter was diagnosed as "autistic" at age 3 (30 years ago) and at age 12 was found to have the full mutation of FRAGILE X SYNDROME, THE LEADING GENETIC CAUSE OF MENTAL IMPAIRMENT IN THE WORLD, INCLUDING AUTISM. Every child who is diagnosed with "autism" needs to have the gene test for fragile x to rule it out as the cause. In our family, both my mother and her sister (age 96) and her son, my brother and his 2 daughters are all PRE-mutation carriers like myself. Give it time.....researcher will discover the gene(s) that are responsible for autistic spectrum disorders. Feel free to visit www.fragilex.org, www.fraxa.org, and especially the M.I.N.D. Institute (http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/MINDInstitute/). The latter conducts extensive research on autism and fragile x.

Whenever I see publicity on TV featuring a child with autism, I can't help notice the large ears, hand flapping, elongated face and other features that are indicative of Fragile X Syndrome. Again, # FACT: For between 2% and 6% of all children diagnosed with autism, the cause is the Fragile X gene mutation.
Thank you for helping promote awareness of fragile x syndrome in your communities. Wishing all of you a wonderful holiday!
