The Patient Pod offers sustainable solution to hospital acquired infections
Media Advisory:
The majority of medical institutions across the nation will soon be challenged by the advent of Value-Based Purchasing. Hospitals need ways to enhance patient safety metrics and improve patient satisfaction.
One of the safety metrics that needs improving, the rate of hospital acquired infections. Nationally HAIs kill 99,000 people a year. That makes it the nation's fourth largest killer, claiming more lives than breast cancer, car accidents and AIDS combined, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
That's why the largest annual gathering of infection preventionists in the world so important. APIC’s Annual Educational Conference & International Meeting is considered the premier educational opportunity for healthcare professionals and expand their knowledge bases and establish practical expertise in infection prevention and epidemiology.

This year's conference theme is "Translating Science - Sustainable Solutions".
The woman pioneering The Patient Pod as a simple, sensible, sustainable health solution is Pat Mastors, Founder and CEO of Pear Health, LLC. "Imagine a woman sobbing at 3 am because she can't reach a tissue and the nurse isn't able to immediately respond to the call button. That unnecessary loss of control in a hospital eats away at a patient's pride and spirit. We set out to give control back to people."
Mastors was motivated to create the Patient Pod after the loss of her father, Bob Stegeman. Mr. Stegeman died of complications from a preventable hospital-acquired infection in 2006. Her five year mission has been to make a differnece in the lives of other patients. Mastors believes hospital patient's deserve more, and that includes clean care and comfort.
The Patient Pod, developed by Fuzion Design Inc, offers a new and unique cost-effective solution to the complex challenges of HAIs. Hospitals already utilizing the Patient Pod system have been won over by its enhancement of hand hygiene, reduction of HAIs risk and patient anxiety, cost-effectiveness, intuitive appeal, and custom branding opportunity.
The Patient Pod by Pear Health, LLC is the first bedside amenity system designed to empower hospital patients. The Patient Pod is a 'portableon-demand' infection deterrent system that includes a custom TV remote control cover to protect you from the most bacteria-laden item in the hospital room. The Pod's patent-pending, self-leveling attachment clamps securely on the bed rail, walker or wheelchair at any angle and travels with the patient.
In trials, 100% of caregivers surveyed say if hospitalized, they'd want The Patient Pod for themselves.
Mastors, a former television news anchor, lobbied successfully for two RI patient safety laws, and in 2010 was part of a select group of patient advocates invited by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement to participate in the first-ever Leadership Summit for Patient Advocates.Mastors serves on the HAI reporting advisory board to the RI Department of Health, and is a member of Consumers Union's Safe Patient Project.
The 38th Annual Educational Conference & International Meeting will be held June 27-29 in Baltimore, MD at the Baltimore Convention Center.
