Former Miss Argentina Dies After Plastic Surgery Complications

Former Miss Argentina 1994 Solange Magnano was laid to rest on Monday; the 38 year old beauty passed away after suffering from complications following butt implant surgery last Wednesday in Buenos Aires.

Magnano, mother of 7-year-old twins, owned her own modeling agency in Argentina, and had been a well known model and won the title Miss Argentina in 1994.

The news that the Miss Argentina died shocked many of her fans. By Monday, a tribute page on Facebook had drawn attention from more than 830 members, CNN reported.

Friends say that Solange Magnano suffered from a pulmonary embolism after the surgery.  The liquid from the injections went straight to her heart and lungs.  Magnano was in intensive care for three days before finally succumbing to those complications.

Two years ago, Donda West (mother of hip-hop idol Kanye) died suddenly one week after a cosmetic procedure.

Plastic Surgery Risks

These two cases remind us that although Hollywood has made plastic surgery seem almost common place, the fact is there is risk involved.  Just as with any surgery, patients need to do their homework before making a decision on exactly what procedure to have, as well as perform a thorough investigation of the facility where the procedure will be performed.

WebMd recently interviewed Liz Skerving, who was asked to be on a reality show about plastic surgery.  To prepare for the show, she had numerous surgeries over a short period of time:  cheek chin implants, eyelid lift, liposuction, dental veneers, to name a few.  Although the patient knew she would be in pain, she didn’t realize how extensive her discomfort would be.  She also didn’t count on getting several infections, post-op.

Be Prepared

To follow up, the patient went to see Dr. Fred Aguilar, plastic surgeon practicing in Houston.  Dr. Aguilar found that one of her cheek implants had migrated up into her lower eyelid.  Her chin implant also shifted. 

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says that those of us pursuing plastic surgery aren’t doing enough investigating.  Dr. Rod Roark, past president of the Society, suggests that patients verify the following before they agree to a procedure:

*Make sure the physician is board certified

 *Find out where the procedure will be performed

*Ask who will handle the anesthesia

*Ask for references and before/after pictures

*Find out about any and all risks associated with the procedure.

Additionally, make sure you have someone with you the day have your procedure, in case you suffer complications from the anesthesia.
