Powerful earthquake hit the Solomon Islands

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in the Solomon Islands on Sunday April 11, 2010 at 08:40 p.m.

The epicenter was located 100 km (65 miles) WSW of Kira Kira, San Cristobal, Solomon Islands; 205 km (130 miles) SE of HONIARA, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands; 245 km (150 miles) S of Auki, Malaita, Solomon Islands; and 2025 km (1260 miles) NNE of BRISBANE, Queensland, Australia.

Yahoo.com reported that the earthquake was measured at 7.1 magnitude.  But according to the USGS, it was 6.8 magnitude. 

NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and NWS (National Weather Services) and West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement saying this strong earthquake is not expected to cause a tsunami along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia or Alaska Coast. So there will be no tsunami warning, watch or advisory in effect for these areas, the agencies said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii will issue a statement regarding the possibility of any tsunami due to the Solomon Islands earthquake for Hawaii and other areas of the Pacific.

Solomon Islands is a country in Melanesia consisting of about 1000 islands covering a land mass of 28,400 square kilometers.  The capital Honiara is located on the island of Guadalcanal, according to wikipedia.
