October 2010 is the first ever Non-GMO Month. This month is dedicated to promoting the awareness of the dangers of genetically modified food.
It’s easy to get involved! Plant non-GMO seeds in your garden, ask your retailer to carry non-GMO products or simply join the Facebook Campaign “Celebrate your right to choose non-GMO!”
For the complete list of top ten actions, view the Take Action Guide.
What Is Non-GMO?
GMO stands for genetically modified organism. Consumer information regarding genetically modified food is not currently regulated in the United States.
Approximately 91% of America’s soybean crop is grown from genetically modified seed and food companies are not required to disclose genetically modified ingredients on their packaging.
In response to this, the Non-GMO Project’s verification program was created. Nearly 900 products have been verified to date, with thousands more in the process of becoming verified and new products joining the program every day.
WholeSoy & Co. was the first soy yogurt company to receive the certification in the Spring of 2010.
