Sunday March 3, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- Eating a plant-based diet can help prevent colorectal cancer while eating a diet high in meat, refined grain and added sugar can increase the risk of developing the cancer, according to a report in Current Nutrition Reports.
The new report authored by Teresa T. Fund and Lisa S. Brown from Simmons College Nutrition Department in Boston MA reviewed dietary pattern/colorectal cancer studies published between Sept 2011 and August 2012 and found strong evidence indicating that a plant-based diet can lower the risk of colorectal cancer.
The review also found evidence suggesting that a diet high in meat, refined grains and added sugar may increase risk of colorectal cancer.
The authors said the association between colorectal cancer and alcohol consumption remains unclear.
It has been clear that a diet high in fiber is critical in preventing colorectal cancer. Adults ideally need 35 to 40 grams of dietary fiber per day, which most Americans can't obtain from their diet. For those who can't have sufficient intake of dietary fiber, fiber supplements can be a good option.
