Wednesday July 13, 2011 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study suggests drinking coffee may reduce the risk of fatty liver or fatty liver disease.

The study involved men who appeared to have fatty liver that had been diagnosed ultrasonically, and  men used as controls without the condition who were matched for their age, body mass index, and daily exercise level  - to  their coffee consumption.

For the study, Kazuo Funatsu of Mitsukoshi Health and Welfare Foundation in Japan and colleagues followed participants for five years.

The researchers found those who suffered fatty liver consumed significantly higher amounts of coffee than those who did not have the condition.

The study appeared in a recent issue of Journal of Health Science - Research Letter.
