Moldova Army enlists garlic, onions to fight swine flu
By David Liu
The Moldovan Army was asking its soldiers to use onions and garlic to prevent swine flu that is spreading in Eastern Europe, the AP reported Thursday.
Col. Sergiu Vasislita, the chief medical officer with the Defense Ministry was cited as saying each soldier would add one small onion and two garlic cloves into his diet as an immunity booster.
The efficacy of onions and garlic against colds and flu is rarely recognized by government officials. Garlic along with echinacea is commonly used in China as traditional Chinese medicine to prevent and cure colds and flu.
Tariq Abdullah, MD from Timbuktu Research Consortium in Laurel Hill, Florida published in 2000 in the journal of the national Medical Association to call for use of garlic and echinacea to prevent and treat colds and flu.
Moldova has about 6,500 troops and the New York Times cited the Romanian Times as reporting later Thursday that the Romania would give Moldova 400,000 doses of swine flu vaccine.
