Sesame seed cake helps prevent obesity

Friday Sept 14, 2012 (foodconsumer.org) -- A study recently published in Food Chemistry suggests that eating sesame seed cake as a supplement may help prevent high fructose diet induced obesity.

Papiya Bigoniya of Department of Pharmacology, Radharaman College of Pharmacy, Ratibad, Bhopal, MP, India and colleagues conducted the study and found rats fed sesame seed cake along with high fructose diet reduced the risk of obesity or weight again.

The authors found rats fed a high fructose diet for one month induced significantly obesity, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidaemia, insulin insensitivity and increased antherogenic index.

However, rats using the same high fructose diet, but in the meantime, also sesame seed cake reduced weight gain or risk of obesity, normalized the blood pressure level and reduced serum cholesterol ,and improved glucose tolerance.

Sesame seed cake also reduced plasma glucose after 120 minutes of glucose loading in the oral glucose tolerance test, indicating that glucose tolerance was improved by the supplement.

The researchers concluded that eating sesame seed cake supplementation can be adopted as a therapeutic strategy to prevent obesity induced type 2 diabetes mellitus or hyperglycemia.

High fructose was found in honey and high fructose corn syrup.  The latter is widely use in soft drinks and processed foods.   Studies found eating fructose is easier to gain weight, compared eating other sugars like sugar and fructose consumption has been associated with obesity epidemic in the U.S.

Sesame seed cake or whatever made of sesame seed provides lots of dietary fiber, lignans, and phenolic compound, all good compounds.  Sesame seed can also be very effective in helping relieve constipation.  There are two types of sesame seeds, white sesame seed and black sesame seed.  Pick black sesame seed because it has desirable black pigments.
