Ellagic acid fights metabolic syndrome induced by high carb, high fat diet

Wednesday May 2, 2012 (foodconsumer.org) -- It's been known that fruit like raspberries and pomegranates and buts may prevent or reverse health conditions such as obesity, diabetes and hypertension, collectively called metabolic syndrome, which can be caused by a high carb and high fat diet. A new study found ellagic acid found in many fruits and nuts may be responsible for this preventative effect.
The current study led by K. Sunil and colleagues found that supplementation of ellagic acid at a dose of 0.8 gram per kg body weight for at least 8 weeks reduced the symptoms in rats induced by a high carb, high fat diet.
For the study, Wistar rats aged 8 to 9 weeks ate one of the four diets namely, cornstarch diet, cornstarch diet supplemented with ellagic acid, high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet and high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet supplemented with ellagic acid for 16 weeks. At the end of 16 weeks, hepatic and metabolic parameters and levels of proteins Nrf2, NF-κB and CPT1 in the heart and the liver were determined.
High-carbohydrate, high-fat diet-fed rats developed cardiovascular conditions, impaired ventricular function, impaired glucose tolerance, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and increased levels of NF-κB and decreased levels of Nrf2 and CPT1 in the heart and the liver, the researchers found.
On the other hand, ellagic acid supplements attenuated these diet-induced symptoms of metabolic syndrome and normalized protein levels of Nrf2, NF-κB and CPT1.
The study was published in 2012 in European Journal of Nutrition.
