Mulberry anthocyanins prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus
Thursday Oct 24, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- Eating berries high in anthocyanins or taking anthocyanin supplements can help prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus, a study in Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine suggests.
The development of type 2 diabetes mellitus is believed to have something to do with inflammation which antioxidants can help relieve. Thus, taking antioxidants like anthocyanins may help prevent diseases like diabetes.
A Sarikaphuti from School of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine, Mae Fah Luang University in Bangkok, Thailand and colleagues conducted the study and found Morus alba L. anthocyanins are highly anti-diabetic as shown in Zucker diabetic fatty rats.
For the study, researchers tested anthocyanins from a mulberry extract which is high in natural antioxidants for its effect on blood glucose and insulin levels in male diabetic fatty rats that had leptin receptors knocked out.
Specifically, rats were given either 125 or 250 mg of the mulberry extract per kg of body weight or 1% carboxymethylcellulose twice a day for five weeks. The rats treated with the extract did not change their body weight, but had significantly lower glucose than the controls.
Rats supplemented with 250 mg of the extract/kg body weight per day had their glucose levels normalized after the five-week treatment. Additionally insulin levels were significantly decreased in rats receiving 250 mg of the mulberry anthocyanins per kg body weight per day.
The study concluded "ANCs (anthocyanins) represent a promising class of therapeutic compounds that may be useful in the prevention of type 2 diabetes." (David Liu)
