Choline, betaine may cut breast cancer death risk
Taking choline and betaine supplements or eating foods containing high levels of these nutrients may help prevent breast cancer and reduce the risk of death from breast cancer and all causes, according to a study in FASEB Journal.
The study led by Xu X. and colleagues from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York, New York shows that higher intakes of betaine and choline were associated with reduced risk of all-cause death and breast cancer death in a dose-dependent fashion.
Choline is an essential nutrient that plays a role in many physiological functions. This nutrient may help prevent cardiovascular disease, cancer, cognitive functioning or memory, neural tube defects and dementia.
Betaine is another nutrient that may help prevent heart disease, homocystinura, and liver disease.
A total of 1508 breast cancer patients were identified in the population-based Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project and by December 31, 2005, 308 of the patients died from all causes and 164 from breast cancer.
The study showed higher intake of free choline was linked with reduced risk of breast cancer.
Additionally, the betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase gene rs3733890 polymorphism was found associated with 56 percent reduced breast cancer death.
The researchers concluded that "high intake of these nutrients may be a promising strategy to prevent the development of breast cancer and to reduce its mortality."
Betaine is found high in beets, broccoli, grains, shellfish, and spinach. Choline is high in wheat germ, egg, Atlantic cod, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and peanut butter.
More reports will be published here in the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month to help our readers to understand what they may do to prevent the disease that is diagnosed in more than 175,000 women and kill about 50,000 each year in the United States.
