Should Jane Fonda take vitamin D to prevent breast cancer recurrence?
Actress and fitness icon Jane Fonda told Entertainment Tonight she was diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks ago and her doctors had the tumor removed. The cancer is non-invasive and she is now free of cancer, according to media reports.
Breast cancer is expected in one in seven women in their lifetime in the United States and each year more than 175,000 women are diagnosed with the disease, which kills about 50,000 a year, according to the National Cancer Institute.
Experts say breast cancer in many cases is preventable. Many lifestyle parameters can be modified to lower the risk of developing the disease. Even in patients with this disease, some measures can be taken to have a better prognosis.
Vitamin D may be a therapeutic agent a breast cancer patient may take to prevent the recurrence of the disease, according to a new study released in the Aug 10, 2009 issue of Journal of Clinical Oncology.
The study led by Goodwin P.J. and colleagues of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada found vitamin D deficiency was linked with poorer outcomes in breast cancer.
The researchers found women with vitamin D deficiency were 94 percent more likely to have recurrence and 73 percent more likely to die, compared with those with sufficient levels in their blood.
The study was based on dietary data from 512 women with early breast cancer diagnosed between 1989 and 1996.
We don't know whether Jane Fonda takes this vitamin. But numerous studies suggest it has something to do with 22 types of malignancies.
