Want to live a few more years? Take vitamin D supplements!

Monday Dec 19, 2011(foodconsumer.org) -- A new study in the Jan 2012 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that getting lots of sunshine or taking vitamin D supplements may reduce risk of premature death.
Armin Zittermann of Ruhr University Bochum in bad Oeynhausen, Germany and colleagues found that the death risk for people with lowest vitamin D measured in the form of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] in a general population was 29 percent higher, compared to those who had the highest serum levels of vitamin D.
The study is based on data from 14 prospective studies of 62,548 individuals of whom 5562 deaths were recorded.
The researchers also found increasing vitamin D from a median reference at 27.5 nmol/L by 12.5, 25, and 50 nmol 25(OH)D serum concentrations /L was associated with reduced risk of death by 14 percent, 23 percent and 31 percent respectively.
However, no further reduction in the risk of death was observed when vitamin D increased by 87.5 nmol/L above the reference point.
The researchers concluded that "data suggest a nonlinear decrease in mortality risk as circulating 25(OH)D increases with optional concentrations ~75 - 87.5 nmol/L.
To maintain a high serum level of vitamin D, you can either get lots of sun exposure, which triggers synthesis of vitamin D, or taking vitamin D supplements.
If you choose to take vitamin D supplements, make sure to use vitamin D Drops instead of tablets or capsules, which can come with lots of fillers.
Vitamin D is found in only a few foods including salmon and mushroom.
