Vitamin b12 deficiency not linked with birth weight

Satuday March 2, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- A study published a study in Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology suggests that vitamin B12 deficiency of a pregnancy woman may not affect the fetal growth or birth weight. The study did not examine the effect of vitamin B12 deficiency on the brain development in the fetuses.
Dr Jiji Elizabeth Mathews from Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore, Tamilnadu, India and colleagues tested vitamin B12 in the blood of low risk women attending an antenatal clinic who were followed until delivery. Fifty eight women had babies with birth weight of less 2500 grams ans fifty eight women had babies with birth weight of greater than 2500 grams.
The rate of vitamin B12 deficiency (defined as less than 200 pg/mL) was found similar in both groups, 33% versus 29%, a difference that was not significant.
The researchers also assessed the women's socioeconomic status and found that low birth weight was associated with low birth socioeconomic status.
The study results may not be applicable to the population in the West as the Western dietary pattern is different from that in India.
