Fluoride Awareness Week – Enough is Enough - Fluoride Must Be Removed from all US Drinking Water Supplies
Fluoride Must Be Removed from all US Drinking Water Supplies
New York – August 8, 2011 – Dentists often brag that promoting water fluoridation would put them out of business. Instead, five new dental schools are opening since 2000, others are being planned and the dentist workforce is growing, according to American Dental Association leaders.1 Modern science shows that fluoride ingestion doesn’t reduce tooth decay2 but can impair health3 and damage children’s teeth4 - making fluoridation a huge waste of taxpayers’ money.
Dr. Joe Mercola and the Fluoride Action Network co-sponsors of Fluoride Awareness Week (Aug 8-13) will enlighten people about the folly of fluoridation and mobilize citizens to take action to stop fluoridation where they live. We at The New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc(NYSCOF) supports their efforts.
Dr. Joe Mercola says fluoride is “a drug so harmful it's been proven to cause serious health issues, including damage to your bones and teeth, as well as your kidneys, thyroid, pineal gland, and even your brain. [Fluoride] is so pervasive that over 40 percent of all American teens between the ages of 12 to 15 show visible signs of having been overexposed to it, and, shockingly, recent international studies indicate that even small dosages of this drug can lower IQ in our children.” 5
Despite 66+ years of fluoridation, tooth decay is a national epidemic6 along with fluoride overdose symptoms – dental fluorosis, white spotted, yellow, brown and/or pitted teeth.7 GAO estimates that 6.5 million children aged 2 through 18 in Medicaid have untreated tooth decay. Emergency Department use of Non-Traumatic Dental Care is a growing dental public health concern. US children have died from the consequences of untreated tooth decay.8
“Clearly fluoridation is a colossal failure and must be stopped,” says attorney Paul Beeber, NYSCOF President. “No legislative body can claim to be cutting budgets to the bone and continue to waste money on fluoridation while endangering the health of their constituents,” says Beeber.
Fluoridation opposition is scientific, respectable and growing Almost 300 communities have stopped or rejected fluoridation since 1990. Fairbanks, Alaska, and Calgary, Ontario, Canada did so this year. The citizens of those communities didn’t give up until they were successful.
The New York City Council has introduced legislation to stop fluoridation in NYC ( Int 0463-2011 ) and a resolution to urge the NYS Department of Health to stop fluoridation (Res 0874-2011). Both need support from NYC residents who should contact the NYC Health Committee and their own council member.
Hopefully, Fluoride Awareness Week will propel people into action to take the steps necessary to stop fluoridation where they live. We all need to help one another get fluoride out of public water supplies and all supermarket food made in fluoridated communities. Here are some ideas. The Fluoride Action Network has more ideas here.

In 2006, the prestigious National Academy of Sciences' (NAS) National Research Council (NRC) revealed that fluoride, even at low doses added to water supplies, poses risks to the thyroid gland, diabetics, kidney patients, high water drinkers, babies and others and can severely damage children's teeth. They ruled that the EPA’s safe water fluoride levels must be lowered to protect against fluoride-caused bone and tooth damage.9 At least three members believe that level should be as close to zero as possible. The EPA has yet to rule on this politically-charged issue.
Fluoride Awareness Week celebrates your right to access news and information on fluoride - its sources, toxicity, and impact to your overall health and well-being. This site contains up-to-date news and resources on fluoride, the consequences of fluoridated water, current fluoridation policy, and other salient issues to help you take action against our current fluoride exposures today.
