Campbell issues SpaghettiOs recall
Campbell Soup Supply Company LLC based out of Paris, Texas on June 17 issued a voluntary recall for about 15 million pounds of "SpaghettiOs with Meatballs" canned products due to possible under processing, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS) announced on its website.
The recall came soon after the company discovered the problem through a routine warehouse inspection and subsequent investigation.
Luckily, there has been no reporting of any botulism-poisoning cases associated with consumption of SpaghettiOs subject to the recall, the FSIS said.
Under-processed meat products can pose a risk of botulism, a rare, life-threatening paralytic illness caused by neurotoxin produced by an anaerobic, gram positive, spore forming bacterium, Clostridium botulium, according to marlerblog.com, owned by Bill Marler, a Seattle-WA based food safety attorney.
Both Campbell Soup and FSIS said on their websites that the products affected by the recall include "SpaghettiOs" with Meatballs with the identifying product code U5 on the bottom of the can; "SpaghettiOs" A to Z with Meatballs with the code "4N" on the bottom of the can; "SpaghettiOs" Fun Shapes with Meatballs (Cars) with the code "KS" on the bottom of the can.
The recalled SpaghettiOs were all packed in 14.75-ounce cans with the company's establishment number "EST 4k" and "Use By" date between June 2010 and December 2011 printed on the bottom of the cans.
The company said that consumers who purchased the recalled product should return the products to the stores where they purchased SpaghettiOs for an exchange or a full refund. Consumers who have any questions about the recall may call Campbell's Hotline at 866 495-3774.
