The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Oct 20 published a statement to alert pet owners to a voluntary recall of cat foods manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods for Premium Edge.

Diamond Pet Foods recalls the products due to the finding of thiamine deficiency in the cat food. The affected products are Premium Edge Finicky Adult cat food and Premium Edge Hairball cat food:  RAF0501A22X 18 lb., RAF0501A2X 6 lb., RAH0501A22X 18 lb., RAH0501A2X 6 lb.  The recalled products were manufactured on May 28, 2009.

All retail outlets have been asked to pull the products from the store shelves and to contact their customers to ask them to check the date code of the cat foods.  Any consumer who keep the products subject to the recall can return them to the retailer.

Cats eating the products of concern may develop some neurological disorders with symptoms including wobbly walking or muscle weakness, paralysis of the hindlimbs, seizures, ventroflexion or bending towards the floor of the neck and abnormal eye movement called nystagmus. The FDA says on its website any cats fed the recalled products that display these symptoms should be taken immediately to a veterinarian.

Pet owners who have any questions regarding the recall may contact Premium Pet Foods by calling 800 977-8707 between 8:00 am and 5:pm central time Monday through Friday.
