A week into New Year resolutions and the reality is setting in. If you made a commitment to diet and exercise, you can't forget to stay hydrated.

Purified Water and filtered water are pretty much the same thing. Water can be purified by distillation, boiling, or reverse osmosis.  Filtered water means it was run through charcoal most likely, which does not remove fluoride. Most tap water is filtered but often reverse osmosis purified. About 80% of bottled water is straight tap water.

If you are looking for an alternative to unflavored water, take a hint your kids will love.
Hint Water has just the slightest of fruity flavors. Hint's faint yet distinct taste won't overwhelm you. But what's even better is what isn't in the water:
  • no sweeteners
  • no juice
  • no calories
  • no preservatives
  • no fat
  • no sodium
  • no carbs
  • no protein
Its everything you were hoping not to find. And that's a good thing for the family.
'Drink water, not sugar' is the company's mantra which reinforces the nutrition rule, don't drink your calories.

Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years according to the Centers for Disease Control

  • obesity among children aged 6 to 11 years increased from 6.5 percent in 1980 to 19.6 percent in 2008.
  • obesity among adolescents aged 12 to 19 years increased from 5.0 percent in 1980 to 18.1 percent in 2008.
High fructose corn syrup in soda, many "fruit-like" drinks that don't contain any juice at all, and even fatty chocolate milk in school lunchrooms have come under fire for contributing to kids' weight gain.
Hint flavors its water with extracts of watermelon, raspberry-lime, and pomegranate-tangerine.  They claim to be among the fastest growing of the flavored waters at Whole Foods.  Hint is also sold at mainstream markets, including Food Emporium, Stop & Shop, Sheetz convenience stores, and online sites like Amazon.com. Hint's blackberry flavor is available at Starbucks.

Some pretty picky kids I know helped me review several bottles and all flavors passed the taste test. It is most certainly better served very crisp and cold.

Why stay hydrated?  Water helps you quell hunger, fight bad breath, and avoid dry mouth. You have about 10 gallons of water in your body. You need to drink at least 48 ounces of water daily to replace what's lost through urination, sweat, and breathing. Doctors say even mild dehydration results in impaired physiological and performance responses. And kids just get plain cranky, ask any mom!

Speaking of moms, don't forget staying hydrated helps minimize the appearance of wrinkles!

Haven't heard of Hint? Kara Goldin, Hint CEO, is the daughter of Bill Keenan (no relation), the food executive who helped developed the Healthy Choice line. Since 2004, Goldin, a former AOL exec, and her husband Theo, a former attorney at Netscape and Hint's COO, have grown the the San Francisco-based company to 20 full-time employees and they expect more than $15 million in wholesale revenue this year.

My challenge to all the flavored water manufacturers - who is going to be the first to reduce waste by packaging products we need to drink more of, in containers that give us more? Containers better suited to families. I want gallon jugs of my favorites for the fridge, car, soccer games, parties, camping ect. I want less recycling blowing down the driveway and fewer single-serve bottles getting stuck under the seats.
Increase the portion and reduce the cost, then watch the water flow off the shelves.
