A study finds that eating slowly and chewing the food as many times as you can reduces calorie intake. The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, shows that chewing each bite 20 to 30 times slowly would reduce the intake of calories by 70. For the study of 30 women, researchers told them to eat a lunch of pasta, tomatoes, and cheese: one group ate slowly with each bite chewed 20 to 30 times, while another group ate their lunch nonstop. Ana M. Andrade and colleagues of the University of Rhode Island in Kingston explained that the body needs some time to experience the natural fullness and send a stop-eating signal. It's been reported that some who enjoy exceptional longevity have a habit of eating food slowly. It is unknown whether better absorption of nutrients or reduced intake of calories or both helps them live longer. The results suggest that people should not skip meals. Feeling too hungry would force the person to eat a meal as fast as possible, leading to overeating and raising the risk of weight gain. By Ben Wasserman, and edited by Heather Kelley.
