Contrary to your belief, not every can breastfeed and all you are doing is provoking fear in women that have no choice. There are millions of healthy children who were fed formula and SOY formula.

I agree with the comment above. If you can't breastfeed your baby, what else can you do?

Excellent post, especially focusing on the significance of breastfeeding. I appreciate your views that those who cannot breastfeed can at least prepare a healthy homemade infant formula rather than using the defective formulas.

If you use Google Scholar you will find that there is concern about the use of soy products. If as these paper state, soy contains significant levels of estrogen like substances, perhaps this explains the early onset of puberty observed in US adolescents? Soy is found in a lot of food products.

When you read an article about soy, check whether the research was funded by the USDA and ask yourself the relevant question.

It should be remembered that:

Plants frequently have chemicals to prevent things eating them - especially unprotected (ie soft) seeds like beans.

It is known that soy contains chemicals that disrupt the thyroid unless properly cooked.

IT is known that soy contains other disruptive agents eg Tryptophan (essential amino acid) inhibitors.

The traditional Asian diet (from which population all claims about soys healthy properties stem)DO NOT eat large quantities of soy UNLESS there is no alternative. The average daily protien intake from soy is 2-10 g from a required 100+ g

Soy in Asian diets is fermented and cooked... and usually served with seaweed, fish or bone soups. Seaweed and fish of course having higher Iodine levels... affording some thyroid protection. Miso is preserved with sea salt.

In Asian diets soy is a side dish.

Asian women are generally physically active, marry young and have babies before 30. These factors might help explain some of the supposed health benefits.

When Asian people migrate to the US the not only adopt parts of the diet, but the lifestyle.

Soy "milk" was invented in the US.
Its called milk as that is a "healthy sounding" word - soy suspension really doesnt grab the imagination.

Soy was not initially registered as a food product in the US, it was grown for the oil, the protein was a "waste".
Successful marketing turned the waste protein into a valuable commodity.

Soy distribution is controlled by a handful of mainly US multinationals.
