Chicken or Egg?

These statistics are nothing new. Even before gay sexuality was mostly kept "a secret". The gay community has not only had a much higher percentage of mental illness issues; but also more physical ailments. Acceptance of "Alternatice Lifestyles" has increased over the last 2-3 decades.
So the questions are: How much shift has there been in the statistics over the past 20/30 years? Does any corrolation in the data indicate that mental illness leads to being gay? or Does being gay really create stress which causes mental illness?
