Dr. Mark Sircus writes on Prostate Treatment Choices ghat proton therapy can run $100,000. Where did he get that erroneous number? Perhaps from a recent incorrect NYT article. He should have re-checked his source. To set the record straight: Medicare reimbursement for proton therapy for prostate, for hospital-based services inclusive of physician charges is less than $40,000.
As he surely knows, there are "charged"
dollars and "reimbursed" dollars. While proton therapy is a bit more espensive, our patient satisfaction rates speak for themselves. Proton therapy's long term value for men is priceless. Far fewer men become incontinent or impotent, or end up sduffering serious side effects. It's the long term positive quality of life outcomes that matters most to these men.

Men -- sure try the above, but the article is biased against PSA testing and treatment for prostate cancer. The folks above have some good guesses, but no real data but probably what they are saying can't hurt and may help. But still get your PSA tested -- read the experts -- American Urological Association, NCCN, etc. As far as choices -- it's a great thing that there are now so many options for treatment -- surgery, radiation, etc. If you have prostate cancer find yourself a good urologist and a good oncologist and be guided by them, not the above article -- your wellbeing and your life may depend on preventing your cancer from spreading out of the prostate!
