The study published in Aug 2009 issue of Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology tested the efficacy and safety of omega-3 fatty acids for children with autism and found the supplementation helped improve the children. Meiri G and colleagues gave ten children one gram of omega-3 fatty acids daily for 12 weeks and they found eight out of nine children improved their condition by 33 percent. The researchers concluded "Omega-3 fatty acids appear to be safe and might be helpful for children suffering from ASD." Taking fish oil supplements or eating fatty fish high in omega-3 fatty acids has been found recently helpful in preventing psychotic disorders or psychosis in people at extremely high risk of the illness, according to a new study in the Feb 2010 issue of Archives of General Psychiatry.
