Eating garlic may help prevent Alzheimer's


A new study published in the online edition of the journal Nature Genetics identified two more genes where mutations are found in Alzheimer's disease patients.

The study by a group of 80 scientists from all over the world found the two new genes are apparently involved in Alzheimer's disease.  One new gene APOJ was found on chromosome 8 and called clustrin and the other new gene known as PICALM was found on chromosome 11. 

The findings may help understand the pathology of Alzheimer's disease and may help researchers develop new drugs to prevent and or treat the disease in the future.

But low-tech and low-cost technologies are readily available for prevention or even treatment of incurable Alzheimer's disease, which affects an estimated four million Americans.

One recent study published in Phytother Res. 2009 Jan;23(1):111-5 suggests that eating garlic may reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.

The in-vitro study led by Gupta VB from Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysore, India found aqueous garlic extract, both fresh and boiled, inhibited Abeta filbril formation in a concentration and time dependent manner.  Fresh garlic juice was also able to defibrillate Abeta preformed fibrils.  

Fibrillar Abeta is the principal component of amyloid plaques in the brain of Alzheimer's patients and the researchers believed the prevention of Abeta aggregation or dissolution of fibrillar Abeta may help prevent the disease.

The researchers concluded "The findings suggest that consumption of garlic may lead to inhibition of Abeta aggregation in human brain."
