At least 16 people perished when flood waters from the Little Missouri and Caddo rivers rose 20 feet overnight, ABC is reporting.

Nestled among the Ouachita mountains, the Albert Pike Campground is located about 75 west of Little Rock and is managed by the U. S. Forest Service.

Tragically, the death toll is expected to go up as rescuers try to uncover who is still missing and who was initially at the campsite (AP). As of this afternoon, an estimated 3 dozen campers are still missing. An American Red Cross spokesperson told ABC News that between 200 and 300 people are estimated to have been in the area. She did not say how many were considered campers as opposed to residents of the area.

The National Guard has dispatched helicopters to the scene. A refrigerated truck will serve as a temporary morgue as rescuers scramble over the area.

The rescue and recovery effort could be problematic due to the wide area the campground covers, a state police spokesperson told the Associated Press. Additionally, the area is isolated, adding to the difficulty of rescue. The entire area is still heavily flooded, and recovery and rescue is expected to last two days.
