Tuesday Oct 16, 2012 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study in Molecular Biology Reports suggests that Allium sivasicum extract may be used to treat or prevent breast cancer, which is diagnosed in more than 230,000 American women each year and kills about 37,000 annually in the U.S.

B. Tepe at Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Science, Cumhuriyet University in Sivas, Turkey and colleagues conducted the study and found Allium sivasicum extracts were toxic to breast cancer cells and inhibited breast cancer growth in rats.

In breast cancer cell lines, Allium sivasicum extracts were associated with increased expression of caspase-7 protein and decreased expression of Ki-67, compared with cells untreated with the extracts.

Also in vivo studies showed breast cancer tumors in rats treated with Allium sivasicum extracts were 62 percent smaller, compared with the tumor size in rats untreated with the extracts.

The researchers concluded "These results indicate that A. sivasicum has antitumoral potential against breast cancer."

The finding is remarkable if human trials confirm the finding because the efficacy seems much better than many prescription chemo therapies. Unfortunately, such trials won't be carried out by drug companies because the breast cancer treatment can't be patented.

There are many things women can do to reduce their risk of breast cancer while the only thing doctors would suggest they do is taking mammogram screening. Vitamin D and C among other things may help prevent breast cancer and maybe many other types of cancer as well, according to previous studies.

Two most important things women can avoid to reduce their risk, according to an authoritative organization, are medical radiation like the one used in mammography and radiotherapy, and hormone replacement therapy.
