# Alpha-lipoic acid supplements fight chronic diseases

Thursday Aug 14, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- A review in Diabetology and Metabolic Syndrome suggests that supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid, a very potent natural antioxidant, may be used to help treat a range of oxidative stress related chronic diseases like Alzheimer's disease and diabetes mellitus.

Experimental studies indicate alpha-lipoic acid supplements may be used as a potential therapeutic agent to treat many chronic diseases including "Alzheimer disease, obesity, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, burning mouth syndrome, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, some types of cancer, glaucoma and osteoporosis."

Additionally, alpha-lipoic acid supplements have been tested as a therapy to treat diabetes mellitus and diabetes mellitus related complications including "retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, wound healing and diabetic cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy".

Many studies examined the therapeutic effect of alpha-lipoic acid supplementation against diabetic peripheral neuropathy in patients with type 1 as well type 2 diabetes mellitus.
