- Description: A University of Nevada review and nine-patient pilot study found supplements of arginine, glutamine and beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate raised tissue hydroxyproline, a collagen component, in diabetic foot ulcers, and that one reviewed trial showed better wound depth and appearance scores.

Sunday Sep 14, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- Taking targeted amino acid supplements helps diabetic foot wounds in diabetes patients, according to a review authored by researchers at University of Nevada School of Medicine in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The authors reviewed the literature pertaining to amino acid supplementation and would healing and analyzed data from a pilot study they conducted and found supplementation with arginine, glutamine and beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate can indeed help diabetes mellitus patients who suffered diabetic foot wounds or ulcers.

Early reports suggest that targeted amino acid supplementation improves would outcomes in surgical incisions and chronic wounds and recovery from radiation injury by increasing tissue hydroxyproline concentrations.

In the pilot study, nine diabetes mellitus patients who were scheduled to receive wound debridement surgery for diabetic foot ulcers were either given placebo or the amino acid supplement twice a day for two weeks. Tissue taken before and after supplementation was analyzed for hydroxyproline, a major component of collagen.

As a result, patients treated with the amino acid supplement had a significantly higher hydroxyproline concentration after supplementation.

The authors also reviewed studies sorted out from MEDLINE/PubMed database, two trials to examine the efficacy of amino acid supplementation on diabetic foot wounds and found wound depth and wound appearance scores of diabetic foot wounds were significantly improved after amino acid supplementation in one trial.

The report concluded "Given the results of our pilot study, and on the basis of a review of the literature, the administration of a simple amino acid supplement may improve the healing of diabetic foot wounds via increased collagen production."
