A new review in American Journal of Gastroenterology finds antidepressants and psychological therapies are 33% more likely than placebo or usual maintenance to improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).Antidepressants including tricyclic antidepressants and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and psychological therapies including cognitive behavioral therapy, multicomponent psychological therapy, hypnotherapy, and dynamic psychotherapy are effective in treating irritable bowel syndrome. The review was based on ten trials of psychological therapies, and four randomized controlled trials of antidepressants on their effects against irritable bowel syndrome. These trials were registered prior to Dec 2013 in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register. (David Liu)Alexander C Ford et. al.
