Monday June 19, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study in Radiation Research suggests that women who are diagnosed with breast cancer and are ready to receive radiotherapy should take curcumin as a dietary supplement daily during the whole course of treatment as the study found that curcumin can help relieve radiation induced dermatitis.

L. Julie from University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York and colleagues conducted the clinical trial and found breast cancer patients receiving curcumin at a dose of 2 grams a time, three times a day during radiation treatment had their Radiation Dermatitis Severity reduced significantly, compared with controls, 2.6 vs. 3.4.

In addition, the researchers found breast cancer patients taking curcumin were less likely to have moist desquamation, compared with those who did not take curcumin, 28.6% vs. 87.5%.

Radiation dermatitis occurs in about 95% of breast cancer patients receiving radiotherapy. The current trial involved 30 breast cancer patients.

Breast cancer in many cases can be prevented. An authoritative organization says that two major risk factors for developing breast cancer are medical radiation and hormone replacement therapy. (reporting by David Liu PHD)
