Monday June 10, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study released in the journal Stroke suggests taking caffeine-containing medicines can increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.

Byung-Joo Park, MD, PhD from Department of Preventive Medicine, Seoul National University College of Medicine in Seoul, South Korea and colleagues conducted the case-control study and found taking caffeine-containing medicines can increase the risk for hemorrhagic stroke by more than 100%.

The researchers compared 940 patients with nontraumatic acute hemorrhagic stroke aged 30 to 84 years who had no history of stroke, 940 community control and 940 hospital controls with age and gender matched to cases for their use of caffeine-containing medications.

The researchers found use of caffeine containing medicines was associated with 123%, 124% and 149 percent increased risk for hemorrhagic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and intracerebral hemorrhage, respectively.

Caffeine containing medicines can be riskier for those who did not use coffee. Among those who did not drink coffee daily, the risk for hemorrhagic stroke was increased by 195% among those who took caffeine containing medicines. (reporting by Jimmy Downs)
