- Description: Czech researchers gave carnitine to rats bred with high blood fat for eight weeks. The supplemented rats gained less weight and had less liver steatosis, lower fasting triglycerides and reduced oxidative stress, suggesting carnitine may ease some metabolic syndrome markers.

Saturday Feb 28, 2015 (foodconsumer.org) -- Scientists at Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine in Czech Republic conducted an animal model study and found that carnitine supplementation helped improve some parameters of metabolic syndrome like lipid metabolic dysfunctions and reduced oxidative stress in rats with high blood fat.

The rats with the hereditary hypertriglyceridemia were fed a standard diet and then half of them received carnitine in a dose of 500 mg/kg body weight for eight weeks and the study rats were compared with rats without the genetic condition paramters tested.

It was found that the rats with high blood fat tended to have high levels of free carnitine in the urine and reduced carnitine in the iver and blood. Carnitine supplementation normalized the condition without causing acrylcarnitine accumulation in skeletal muscle.

Rats receiving carnitine supplemenets experienced lower weight gain, reduced liver steatosis, and lower fasting triglyceridemia and greater reduction in serum free fatty acids.

Carnitine supplementation also increased mitochondrial biogenesis and lipid oxidation, reduced oxidative stress, and restored substrate-switching in the liver while it significantly boosted palmitate oxidation and promote oxidation of fatty acids and enhanced insulin sensitivity ex vivo.

The study suggests that carnitine supplementation can attenuate some parameters of metabolic syndrome, paticularly fatty acid oxidation, steatosis and oxidative stress in the liver. (David Liu, PHD)
