- Description: In mouse models of Lewis lung carcinoma, Chaga mushroom extract given at 6 mg/kg/day for three weeks cut tumor size by 50 percent and metastatic nodules by 25 percent compared with controls, suggesting a possible role in treating lung cancer and limiting spread.

Friday Nov 09, 2016 (foodconsumer.org) -- Mushroom, the smallest room in the world, is known to have an anticancer effect against various cancers. A new study in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry indicates an extract from a mushroom called Chaga mushroom may be used to treat Lewis lung cancer.

For the study, mouse models of Lewis lung carcinoma growth and spontaneous metastasis were treated with the extract at the dose of 6 mg/kg/day for three weeks.

The study finds the extract significantly suppressed tumor progression in both models. In mice treated with the extract, tumor was reduced 50% in the tumor bearing mice and the number of nodules was decreased by 25% in the metastasis model, compared to the control mice.

The study suggests that Chaga mushroom extract may be used to treat lung cancer and prevent metastasis. (David Liu)
