- Description: In an eight-week trial at Tabriz University, 60 NAFLD patients took vitamin E with either chlorella vulgaris tablets or placebo. Both groups improved, but the chlorella group saw larger drops in weight, alkaline phosphatase and fasting blood sugar. Authors call it a possible add-on.

Friday Aug 8, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- Scientists at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in Tabriz, Iran have recently published a study in Health Promotion Prospective suggesting that chlorella vulgaris supplementation helps fight non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

The study was intended to examine how chlorella vulgaris supplementation affects liver enzymes, serum glucose and lipid profiles in patients with NAFLD. Enrolled in this double-blind randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial were 60 patients with NAFLD who visited clinics of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences from Dec. 2011 through July 2012.

Half participants were given 400 mg per day of vitamin E plus 300 mg tablets of chlorella vulgaris and the other half were given placebo consisting of 400 mg vitamin E per day and four placebo tablets per day for a period of eight weeks. Tests on weight liver enzymes and metabolic factors in fasting blood samples were performed at baseline and the end of the trial.

As a result, Both groups of patients decreased weight, liver enzymes, fasting blood sugar (FBS) and lipid profiles significantly while supplementation with chlorella vulgaris reduced weight, alkaline phosphatase, and fasting blood sugar more significantly.

The researchers concluded "C. vulgaris seems to improve FBS and lipid profile and therefore could be considered as an effective complementary treatment in NAFLD." (david Liu)
