Sunday Oct 20, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- An observational study in the Aug 2013 issue of the journal Urology hints that some foods and supplements may relieve the symptoms of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome and some may worsen them.

A. S. Herati of Arthur Smith Institute for Urology, Hofstra North Shore LIJ School of Medicine in New Hyde Park, NY surveyed 95 men who are diagnosed with chronic prostatitis for their dietary habits -foods and supplements they used and the pelvic pain symptoms they experienced.

Foods that make the symptoms worse include spicy foods, coffee, hot peppers, alcoholic beverages, tea and chili and foods that alleviate the symptoms most effectively include docusate, pysllium, water, herbal tea, and polycarbophil.

Docusate is a medication that is indicated to treat occasional constipation. It can make the stool softer and easier to pass.

Pysllium is a dietary fiber that can be used to control cholesterol. It is a mild laxative that can help alleviate the symptoms of constipation and mild diarrhea. Studies also show that this dietary fiber can also be used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. Pysllium is available as a dietary supplement.

Polycarbophil is a bulk forming laxative that helps form the bulk and increase the bowel movement. It can also increase the amount of water in the stool and make the stool softer and easier to pass. This medication may also be used to relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome or diarrhea. (DL)
