- Description: Curcumin treatment lowered liver triglycerides and serum fetuin-A in rats eating a high-fat diet. Fetuin-A tracks with visceral obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes and fatty liver, and the authors suggest its reduction may account for part of curcumin's benefit against obesity.

Tuesday Dec 3, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- A study in Journal of Physiology and Biochemistry shows that treatment with curcumin can reduce the formation of fetuin-A in rats eating a high fat diet. Fetuin-A is linked to metabolic disorders such as visceral obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus and fatty liver. Curcumin is known for its antioxidative, anticarcinogenic anti-inflammatory and hypoglycemic properties. Curcumin treatment effectively reduced liver triglycerides and serum fetuin-A levels in rats on a high fat diet. The study suggests that "the reduction of fetuin-A may contribute to the beneficial effects of curcumin in the pathogenesis of obesity."ReferenceOner-?yido?an Y, Koçak H, Seyidhano?lu M, Gürdöl F, Gülçubuk A, Yildirim F, Cevik A, Uysal M.
