Researchers at the University of Windsor in Ontario published some studies to suggest dandelion root extract can be enlisted to fight cancer.

Professor Siyaram Pandey, PhD. and colleagues found [dandelion root extract](http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ecam/2011/129045/abs/?ref=foodconsumer.org) causes death of drug-resistant human melanoma cells without inducing any apparent toxicity to healthy cells.

Melanoma is one of most aggressive and dangerous cancers. The cancer is diagnosed in more than 65,000 men and women in the United States each year and kills about 9,000 people annually in the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Natural News reported that AOR, a Calgary-based company, was developing a dandelion tea powder now for a study of 30 patients who had suffered various cancers which could not be helped with conventional therapies.

The trial organizer - the University of Windsor was cited as saying on its website that the University has tested a simple water extract of dandelion root and found it effective against a number of cancer cells including human T cell leukemia, chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, pancreatic cancer and colon cancer. Animal tests also proved the efficacy of the extract against human colon cancer cells.

The anticancer property of dandelion leaf extract has been known for some time. A laboratory [study ](https://www.spandidos-publications.com/ijo/32/5/1085?ref=foodconsumer.org)published in 2008 in the International Journal of Oncology found dandelion tea helped kill breast cancer cells and prostate cancer cells.
