- Description: Toshiharu Ninomiya's team followed 1,006 Japanese adults aged 60 to 79 for a median 15 years. Those adhering most closely to a diet high in soybeans, vegetables, algae and dairy and low in rice had 34% and 55% lower risk of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.

Wed. Aug 7, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new Japanese study published recently in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that what a person eats makes some difference in his risk of developing dementia.

Toshiharu Ninomiya from Department of Medicine and Clinical Science, Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Kyushu University in Japan and colleagues conducted the study and found men and women who followed a dietary pattern could reduce the risk of dementia by up to 55%.

The diet included high amounts of soybeans and soybean products, vegetables, algae, and milk and dairy products and low amounts of rice.

Specifically the study found that after adjustment for potential confounders, those in the highest quartile of the score of adherence to the dietary pattern were 34 and 55% reduced risk for Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia, respectively, compared with those in the lowest quartile.

For the study, 1006 community dwelling Japanese men and women without dementia aged 60 to 79 years were followed for a median of 15 years during which 271 men and women developed all-cause dementia. Of the identified cases, 144 had Alzheimer disease and 88 had vascular dementia.

The researchers concluded "Our findings suggest that a higher adherence to a dietary pattern characterized by a high intake of soybeans and soybean products, vegetables, algae, and milk and dairy products and a low intake of rice is associated with reduced risk of dementia in the general Japanese population."
