Saturday June 28, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study recently published in the medical journal Circulation suggests that patients suffering chronic inflammatory disorders are at increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease.

In the study, the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease was found 32% higher in those suffering systemic autoimmune disorders and 29% higher in those diagnosed with systemic vasculitis, compared with those who did not have inflammatory disorders. The risk was also higher in those with organ specific inflammatory disorders like severe psoriasis (29% higher) and ulcerative colitis (26% higher).

The study was based on data from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink involving participants with severe psoriasis, mild psoriasis, bullous skin diseases, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, inflammatory arthritis, systemic autoimmune disorders, and systemic vasculitis and matched controls.

Overall, those who diagnosed with chronic inflammatory diseases were at 20% increased risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease.

The study also found that participants in the highest tertile of c-reactive protein, an indicator of the level of inflammation, were at 52% increased risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease.

The study concluded "The risk of cardiovascular diseases and T2DM (type 2 diabetes mellitus) is increased across a range of organ-specific and multi-system chronic inflammatory disorders with evidence that risk is associated with severity of inflammation."

The study was conducted by researchers at King's College London in London, United Kingdom.
